About Clean Water Week
The State of New Hampshire is home to approximately 70 wastewater treatment facilities operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week to treat sewage and protect our rivers, lakes, and coastal waters from pollution. From Lake Winnipesaukee in the Lakes Region, to the Great Bay in the Seacoast, and west to the Connecticut River along our border, clean water is fundamental to New Hampshire’s environment, economy, and quality of life.

Wastewater treatment facilities, sewer collection systems, and the dedicated professionals who operate and maintain them provide an essential public service to our communities every day. Their work safeguards public health, and protects our environment.

Clean Water Week offers a unique opportunity to learn about and better understand the sewer systems and public services we rely on but rarely see. This event provides rare access to critical public infrastructure, giving community members a behind-the-scenes look at local wastewater treatment. Attendees can gain insight into the daily operations of treatment facilities, ongoing infrastructure improvements, and local efforts to maintain and upgrade these vital systems. Participating in Clean Water Week as either a municipality or community member effectively promotes broader public engagement in water protection and conservation efforts at both the local and statewide levels.
